Bedding and Upholstery Disinfecting

According to the PA Bedding and Upholstery Law all items sold by Tykes2Teens that are multi-layered or filled MUST be disinfected and re-tagged prior to being offered for sale. Failure to comply with this law may result in fines that might be passed along to our consignors, so we take it very seriously. If an item, or any part of it, you are bringing to us to sell has or had one of those long bedding tags attached to it (the long ones that read “UNDER PENALTY OF LAW THIS TAG NOT TO BE REMOVED EXCEPT BY CONSUMER”), we must disinfect it and re-tag it with one of our yellow re-sale tags before it can be offered for sale.

Q: What is included under the PA Bedding and Upholstery Law?

A: Upholstered furniture like gliders and kid-sized stuffed chairs, chair pads for items like stroller, high chairs, bouncy seats, exersaucers, walkers, swings, car seats, booster seats and even rocking chairs, pads for changing tables, play pens, pack and plays and activity sets, mattresses, pillows, including nursing pillows, padded baby carriers and slings and any item that has multiple layers to it or contains some form of concealed filling material.

Q: Will all bedding need to be sprayed?

A: No, sheets and blanket that are single layered will not need to be sprayed.

Q: What are you spraying to protect against?

A: We are spraying to protect against mold, mildew, bacteria, fungus, bed bugs, dust mites, lice, fleas, and the eggs of such pests. These are things that can hide deep within multi-layered items that may not easily be laundered. If any of these are present in or on an item when it arrives at the sale site, the spraying process will kill them on contact and insure that they do not make their way in to the next owner’s home.

Q: What items will Tykes2Teens no longer accept as a result of this law and why?

A: Crib bedding sets, crib bumper pads, crib quilts, bedding sets, quilted bedspreads, and sleeping bags. These items are just too large for us to unpackage, spread out flat to spray, dry thoroughly and repackage in the short period of time we have set aside for drop-off. Therefore, we have elected to cease carrying these items at our sales.

Q: How will the spraying process work?

A: All items considered to be multi-layered must be presented to a Tykes2Teens team member upon arrival for drop-off. Such items will be gathered in a central location and sterilized and disinfected with one of two state approved disinfection sprays; Sterifab® or Microban® X-580 with Tracer. Once the items are sprayed, dried and recorded in a log, a yellow bedding and upholstery tag bearing our registration and permit numbers will be affixed in a prominent place to the item and the item placed on the sales floor. Failure to comply with these measures may result in fines if we are inspected and found to be out of compliance. Fines due to noncompliance may be passed along to the consignor as it will be the consignor’s responsibility to get these items to the spraying area at drop off.

Q: How will I know what items need to be sprayed?

A: Any item or part of an item that has or had one of those long bedding tags attached to it qualifies under this law and will need to be sprayed. If any of your items has a concealed layer of filling inside of it then it will need to be sprayed. If you are unsure, it is better to ask a Tykes2Teens team member about it rather than risk having a fine passed along to you.

Q: What if I do not want my items to be sprayed?

A: If you do not want your items to be sprayed then we CAN NOT sell your items for you. We will not make any exceptions or we risk being fined for non-compliance.
